Dr Anand Patel
For years, the body below the waist has been the hardest thing for South Asian men to speak about. Dr Anand has spent his career making it ordinary to ask.
He qualified at King's College London in 2000 and gained his MRCP in 2004. Before settling into general practice he spent a year as Head of Sex Education and a biology teacher at Brighton College, trained as a GP in Mid Sussex, and became a GP partner and training programme director in Worthing. In 2012 he was in the first cohort to gain the Fellowship of the European Committee for Sexual Medicine.
Where the science and the silence meet
Today he works across general practice at Binfield Road Surgery in Lambeth, the Centre for Men's Health on Harley Street on testosterone deficiency and erectile difficulties, and the Jonathan Ramsay Male Fertility Clinic. He gives medical oversight to Manual and Optimale, sits on the executive committee of the British Society for Sexual Medicine, and is secretary of the Primary Care Testosterone Advisory Group. His research follows a thread that matters deeply for our communities: low testosterone links to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, all of which fall harder on South Asian men. Many will know his face from Embarrassing Bodies, Celebrity Save Our Sperm and Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.
Sharm survives on silence. Dr Anand has spent his career giving men somewhere else to put it.
