Dr Gayathri Delanerolle
She has endometriosis and went through medical menopause. She knows from the inside what it is when a system decides your pain is not measurable enough to matter.
She began by co-authoring the technical manuals of her field, Clinical Trials and Tribulations and Quality Assurance Management, and then turned that fluency outward: Long COVID, chronic pain, perinatal and minority mental health, medical menopause. She uses natural language processing on electronic health records, synthetic data modelling and large-scale meta-analysis to make invisible suffering countable.
Building the evidence no one could ignore
She founded the Digital Evidence-Based Medicine Lab with Professor Jian Qing Shi and Dr Peter Phiri, and leads the PLATO project on period poverty across Ghana, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam. She wrote Searching for Ourselves in a System Built Without Us and Reclaiming Knowledge, contributed to the UK Women's Health Strategy and to policy commentary in the BJGP, and works as a Chartered Scientist and clinical epidemiologist across Oxford, Southampton and the NHS. For her this is not activism instead of science: it is science done properly, with the missing people finally counted in.
Her work exists because her own pain was not believed the first time. She made sure the next person's would be harder to dismiss.
