Endometriosis, when it's misread as 'stress' or 'a weak period'

In UK clinics, endometriosis takes an average of 8 years and 10 months to diagnose from the first visit. For South Asian women, that delay is often worse. Severe period pain is culturally normalised, language barriers make symptom description harder, and the default assumption for a woman reporting pelvic pain is often a urinary infection or stress.

The hallmark pattern to recognise: pain that worsens year on year, pain that cannot be fully controlled with ibuprofen, pain during sex, pain on passing stool around period time, heavy periods with clots, and fertility difficulties. Any one of these alone may not mean endometriosis. Several together, persisting, is worth investigating.

A normal scan followed by 'it's normal, come back if it gets worse' is not the end of the road. It is reasonable to request a second opinion or a gynaecology referral.

Many South Asian women describe reaching a point where they stop mentioning pain to family, because the response is always the same: 'All women go through this.' They are not wrong that many women go through pain. They are wrong that all of it is normal.

Bringing a family member to an appointment can help with language and confidence. Bringing someone outside the family, a friend, a colleague, can sometimes help more, especially if you need to describe symptoms you have not said aloud at home.
