Fertility clinics in India: understanding your options
3 sections · 3 min read
How has the fertility clinic landscape in India changed?
India's private fertility sector has grown substantially over the past two decades. Alongside established single-centre clinics, several national chains now operate across multiple cities, including Indira , Nova , Cloudnine, Apollo Fertility, and Bloom . These chains offer standardisation across sites, which can be useful for couples who may split their care between cities.
The ART (Regulation) Act 2021 introduced formal licensing requirements for ART clinics and sperm banks, prohibiting commercial surrogacy for foreign nationals and regulating gamete donation. Clinics registered under this framework operate under ICMR oversight. Registration is a minimum standard; it does not guarantee outcome quality.
The information here is about the landscape, not a recommendation of any clinic or chain. The right clinic depends on your specific presentation, location, budget, and comfort with the team. These are yours to weigh.
What does fertility treatment actually cost in Indian private clinics?
costs in India's private sector are substantially lower than in the UK or US, though they have risen significantly over the past decade. A single stimulated cycle including egg collection, fertilisation, embryo culture, and fresh transfer at a national chain typically ranges from approximately INR 1.2–2.5 lakh (roughly £1,100–£2,300), depending on city, clinic, and protocol. Medications (gonadotrophins) are additional and vary depending on dose and protocol.
Frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles are less expensive than stimulated cycles, typically INR 30,000–60,000 additionally. If multiple embryos are frozen after one retrieval cycle, subsequent FET cycles reduce the cost per attempt.
Additional costs that are often not quoted upfront include: (if needed), embryo biopsy for PGT-A, sperm freezing, cryopreservation fees, and cycle cancellation (where drugs are used but retrieval does not proceed). Ask for a complete cost schedule in writing before committing.
How do you evaluate a fertility clinic in India?
Useful questions to ask when evaluating any Indian fertility clinic: Is the clinic registered under the ART Act 2021? What is your live birth rate per embryo transfer for patients in my age group? Do you report to the ICMR National ART Registry? What is your policy on elective freeze-all versus fresh transfer? Who performs egg collection and transfer, a named consultant or a rotating team?
Success rate claims require careful reading. Headline success rates quoted in marketing are typically pregnancy rates (positive test) rather than live birth rates (baby born). The difference is significant, early pregnancy loss after is common. Request age-stratified live birth rates, not pregnancy rates.
Embryo quality grading varies between clinics. Reputable clinics use standardised grading systems (Gardner for blastocysts, for example) and will explain what the grade means for the chances of a successful transfer.
